MEET JOHN

John Lowndes was born in Winter Park and raised in Central Florida, graduating from Edgewater High School before earning his undergraduate degree from Florida State University, a master's degree from the University of Florida focused on politics and refugee issues, and a law degree from American University in Washington, D.C. While in private practice in Washington, John met his wife, Julie, who was then working on Capitol Hill. Early in his career, John worked in Native American law, representing tribal governments across the country, giving him firsthand experience navigating complex governmental systems and advocating for communities often overlooked in the policymaking process. During that time, he and Julie lived in D.C., Oregon, and Alaska.

After returning home to Central Florida, John spent several years at the Orange County Attorney's Office, developing expertise in how local government actually works – covering land use, water and environmental issues, utilities, and infrastructure. He brought that experience directly into public service in Maitland, chairing the Planning and Zoning Commission before being elected to City Council in 2013 and Mayor in 2021.

As Mayor, John has built a reputation as a thoughtful, steady leader focused on getting things done the right way, guiding major investments including a new public library, downtown revitalization, and long-term planning to manage growth responsibly while preserving quality of life for residents. John and Julie have lived in Maitland for over two decades and raised their three children in the community.

John continues to practice law, serving as in-house counsel to a nonprofit healthcare consortium. Now, John is running for State Senate to bring his practical, solutions-oriented approach to Tallahassee, focused on lowering costs, raising wages, and restoring a more balanced and respectful approach to government.
